Divino Espírito Santo Celebrations
On Terceira Island, the Holy Spirit Festivals are a celebration deeply rooted in the community, revealing a unique authenticity. The religious processions and traditional coronations bring color and movement to the streets, creating an atmosphere that is both festive and symbolic. Sharing and giving are the fundamental values of these celebrations.
For eight weeks, starting from Easter, the island takes on its own rhythm. In various locations, each Empire or Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit, local associations, take charge of organizing the festivities. It is from here that everything happens: the sharing, the devotion, and the moments of conviviality.
What makes these celebrations unique is not only their religious dimension, but above all the community spirit that sustains them. There is a tradition of sharing food, namely bread, meat and wine, which applies not only to the inhabitants but also to visitors, in a gesture that symbolizes equality, generosity and abundance. A way of involving everyone in this great celebration.
With roots dating back to the 15th century and devotion to Queen Saint Isabel, the Festivals of the Divine Holy Spirit are today one of the most significant cultural expressions of the Azores, and are experienced with particular intensity on Terceira Island. On the last Sundays of the celebrations, Pentecost Sunday and Trinity Sunday, the most significant festivities take place, generally known as Bodos, Bodo Sunday, or First and Second Bodo.
